Learn About 4Cs

The 4Cs of diamonds are the fundamental factors that determine a diamond’s quality and value. These four characteristics are:

Cut

The cut of a diamond refers to the way it has been shaped and polished. A well-cut diamond will reflect light optimally, producing a brilliant sparkle that is considered the most desirable. The cut of a diamond is graded on a scale of Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, and Poor.

Clarity

Clarity refers to the presence of any internal imperfections or inclusions within a diamond. The fewer inclusions a diamond has, the clearer and more valuable it will be. Inclusions are graded on a scale of FL (Flawless), IF (Internally Flawless), VVS1 (Very, Very Slightly Included 1), VVS2, VS1 (Very Slightly Included 1), VS2, SI1 (Slightly Included 1), SI2, and I1 (Included 1).

Color

The color of a diamond refers to the absence of any yellow or brown tint. The closer a diamond is to colorless (D), the more valuable it will be. Diamonds are graded on a color scale ranging from D (colorless) to Z (light yellow).

Carat Weight

Carat weight is a measure of a diamond’s mass and is the most common way to determine its size. A carat is equal to 200 milligrams, and diamonds are graded on a carat weight scale ranging from 0.01 to 3 carats and beyond.

Together, the 4Cs of diamonds provide a comprehensive assessment of a diamond’s quality and value. When purchasing a diamond, it is important to consider all four factors in order to make an informed decision.
